About Us
Established in 1957, Prairie State College is a leading public community college in
Illinois, serving as a part of Illinois Community College District 515. The college
awarded its first Associate of Applied Science in Nursing in 1966.
The PSC Nursing Program offers a rigorous academic and professional education, preparing students for careers in nursing. Graduates become proficient practitioners, capable of delivering and overseeing direct care in diverse healthcare settings. Meeting State Education Requirements
The registered nursing program at Prairie State College meets the state education requirements for an entry-level nursing license in the state of Illinois. However, if you plan to practice in a different state, U.S. Territory, or the District of Columbia, we encourage you to contact the appropriate licensing agency to ensure that our program meets their specific requirements. Nursing Program Completion
Nursing, AAS
This program prepares students for careers in nursing. The program combines courses
in general and nursing education with selected learning experiences in hospitals and
health agencies. Graduates of the Associate in Applied Science degree program may
apply to take the NCLEX-RN examination for licensure as a registered nurse.
Please note: This program has special admissions requirements. Contact Enrollment Services to obtain a copy of the Nursing Information Booklet. (Starts fall only).
Prior to admission to the Nursing Program, students must complete NURS 100 Nurse Assistant Training (7) with a grade of C or better or demonstrate current status on the Illinois Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Registry. Credit earned for NURS 100 is not included in the 64 credit hours required for the Nursing A.A.S. degree.
Students also must complete BIOL 221 Human Anatomy and Physiology I (4) with a grade of C or better prior to admission to the Nursing Program. Credits earned for BIOL 221 are included in the 64 credit hours required. Students are encouraged to complete as many general education courses as possible before enrolling in the Nursing Core Courses listed below in Section II.
